FNB 4/4/14: Friday Night Baseball

Yo!

Ray and I were sitting around chatting, like you do, and got to talking about how Ray’s never been to a Rancho Quakes game (minor league baseball). Well, we thought we’d better do something about that.

Introducing Friday Night Baseball (a play on and nod toward Friday Night Dinner, which I’m temporarily relocating with Ray’s blessing)

So, on April 4th we have 20 tickets purchased for the cafe area out at the ballpark. For those who don’t know, it’s table seating in a zone just down the 3rd base line and it’s a great set up for groups and families – people can move around (“people” = kids). It’s for groups only and the minimum is 20 so Matt and I just went ahead and bought 20 tickets trusting that (some of) you all will in fact want to join us. There is more room there, so if we need more than 20, we can likely get them although we’ll need to call to set that up.

Game starts at 7:05 and it’s family night, meaning $1 hot dogs and ice cream sandwiches. Tickets are $8.00 a piece and all people 3 and up need a ticket. Littler ones are free.

So – here’s the link to the spread sheet sign up spreadsheet – consider this a first come first serve sort of deal. Put your name and the # of tickets you want in there. If we have more interest than tickets, I’ll see if we can get more, so if we get the counter down to 0 tix available, still put your name in if you want to go.

If people think this is a good idea, we can do it again!

Yours in sports,
Jacque

FND 3/28/14: Dumplings of the World

This week we celebrate the balls of deliciousness known as dumplings.  So many countries, so many kinds.  The Levy-Kome home is sporting an assortment of dim sum and pot stickers, but you might prefer chicken and dumplings or empanadas or kreplach or  …

Check out ye olde WIkipedia for some inspiration:

Then bring em on.

3/21/14: Paleo – birthday extravaganza

In honor of Christina, who is leaving us for snowier, windier pastures in Chicago and Sam, who was born in Chicago just as Spring sprung, we are having the first ever FND Paleo extravaganza.  Now I have to go look up what that means…  back in a sec …

OK.  I’m back.  Here’s what I found out about Paleo(lithic) food.

YES:

Paleo includes fresh lean meats and fish, fruits, and vegetables, and healthier fats.  You can also eat eggs, nuts and seeds and healthier oils, including olive oil and coconut oil.  I think you can cook/grill things.

NO:

You can’t eat any processed foods. And since our ancestors were hunter-gatherers, not farmers, say goodbye to wheat and dairy, along with other grains and legumes (such as peanuts and beans). Other foods to avoid:  refined sugar, potatoes, salt, refined vegetable oils, such as canola.

Here’s a pretty picture of a paleo dinner party:

See ya soon!

FND 3/14/2014: Breakfast

Bring us your eggs, your bacon, your grits, and all kinds of pan-shaped cakes.  Ray might have to do an encore of those banana fritters.

BREAK that FAST!

FND 3/7/2014: Fat Friday Mardi Grad

Check out these 30 recipes from southern living and whoop it up with us this Friday.  Ray is gonna work on some beignets.  Put some South in our mouth!

Feb 14, 2014: Love that Fried

We are fried.  The teenager organized an amazing stuffed critter sale this week, and has decided to celebrate by attending a high school performance of Avenue Q tonight.  Our house has almost recovered from factory status.

Meanwhile, I believe someone called the theme “fried” for this week.

Stir fry, deep fry, pan fry, it is all welcome!

You could also bring your favorite healthy-thing-you-eat-with-fried-food-to-counterbalance-the-eating-experience.

BRING ON THE FRY!

I’m thinking of making beignets, otherwise known as banana fritters.

Happy Day for things and people you Love.

FND 2/7/2014: Mixed Culture Food Sculpture

So we might be batty. In fact, we’re not ’round the bend, we’re down the road eighteen miles. Anyway this theme tickles our loony humor so let’s roll with it.

Fusion food (put some curry in your taco or some sushi in your salad or maybe use some baguette as the bun for your hotdog).

As an extra challenge, if you aren’t lost enough already (Hey — crazy people don’t make no road maps. You gotta get their yo’self) bonus points if your food is sculpted in a creative manner. The mother-person makes talk of prizes. (?!?!)

Ideas:

  • carving fruit counts
  • toothpicks are a go
  • please no glue
  • unless it’s delicious edible glue
  • the paste you ate as a child does not count

FND 1/24/2014: Cha, te, tea, だ, 다, 茶, chai, ಚಹಾ, PARTY

I got mobbed by tea party advocates. Not the political party this time, but my friend-people who want would like to sip tea-drink from cup-things and nibble bite-sized food-stuffs and dress-up in fancy-nice cloth-coverings. Thus, I suppose, they (and I) will celebrate the end of final exams. Or maybe we’ll just celebrate that it’s Friday. In any case, come have a tea party!

Tea party appropriate clothing is required*

*Only clothing is required, dress as you wish, but it’ll be more fun if you have an interesting hat or something.

If you have potlucker’s block, just pretend this is cute appetizers, I guess.

FND 12/20/2013: National Anti-Utensil Day

This Friday is National Anti-Utensil Day*

In honor of this age-old** tradition, we will be eating finger foods, hand foods, face foods, and tooth foods. There has been a call for tacos and hand rolls*** and appetizery things and maybe some drinkable things plus also some nosh-able things. Hurray! Sound delicious****
Also, hey S’mores! woot!

See you soon!
–People who live in a house

*This Friday is not National Anti-Utensil Day. I made that up.
**”Age-old” as in this tradition is one day old, that’s its age.
***hand rolls does not mean somersaults that hands do. Don’t be ridiculous you can’t eat those.
****Like, super duper delicious with extra delicious on the side because I wanted more but it wouldn’t all fit in one dish.

FND 12/6/2013: Fried + complement makes whole

To honor the Hannukah that just happened but didn’t get an FND because Thanksgiving played the “but I only get one day” card, this week is fried food (on Hannukah we celebrate the miracle that is oil).

Since I hear that “fried” is not a balanced meal (not that I really care–donuts are totally a legitimate and healthy way to feed yourself), we will also allow things that complement fried food, and thus our dinner will be whole and hearty.

See you soon!
